The GOAT discussion has boiled down to who had won the most international titles. And Cristiano Ronaldo had moved ahead in the race after leading Portugal to a Euro Cup victory in 2016 and a Nations League trophy in 2019. Lionel Messi responded by winning the Copa America in 2021. The FIFA World Cup championship was then placed as the goalpost to end the long-running feud. And it was Messi who silenced Ronaldo supporters as Argentina defeated France in a thrilling final on Sunday night at the Lusail Stadium.

Argentina and France drew 3–3 after 120 minutes, with Messi scoring twice for Argentina and Kylian Mbappe scoring three times for France. Argentina went up in the penalty shootout after Messi scored from the spot. Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez then made a save before Gonzalo Montiel scored the game-winning goal to enable Argentina win the tiebreaker 4–2.

Moments after the great final, ‘Ronaldo’ started trending on social media with fans stating that Messi had closed the discussion with Argentina’s first-ever World Cup title in 36 years as he “finished football”. His spectacular CV currently includes ten La Liga championships, seven Copa del Reys and seven Spanish Super Cups, four Champions League titles, three UEFA Super Cups and three FIFA Club World Cups, a Ligue 1 title, the Copa America trophy, and seven Ballon D’ors.

Messi has a World Cup title.
Ronaldo has yet to win a World Cup.

The argument is about individuals.

Speaking of Ronaldo, the Portugal captain had a terrible World Cup campaign in Qatar. He started the tournament on a high note as he became the first player to score in five different World Cups, but his struggles continued as he came off the bench in two crucial matches for Portugal, the Round of 16 against Switzerland and the Morocco encounter. Portugal finally lost 0–1 to Morocco in the quarterfinals.
